Metro Atlantans treated to a 'Taste of Britain'

NORCROSS, Ga. -- Although Edna Berkshire is proud to call Norcross home, she still loves to share her English culture and cuisine with her American neighbors.

In fact, Berkshire brings a "Taste of Britain" to Metro Atlanta every day.

Taste of Britain, a popular grocery and gift shop, has been a fixture of the Historic Norcross Town Center since 1989. Berkshire, who took over for the original Scottish owner in 1992, loves working on Gwinnett's Peachtree Street.

"During the years that we've been here, we've seen some other shops come and go, but the location here seems to be the best that we could find," she said.

Indeed, Taste of Britain's proximity to I-85 and I-285 draws plenty of travelers, in addition to local expatriates, Anglophiles and anyone else who can't resist the lure of hard-to-find goodies from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Berkshire makes frequent buying trips to her homeland, stocking up on the fare that her regular customers expect to find on the shelves. All of Taste of Britain's merchandise is imported from the United Kingdom. The meats are prepared by Atlanta-based British butchers to ensure that they carry the traditional flavor.

"We've [also] got Union Jack mugs and napkins and plates and cups and . . . a lot of souvenir-type stuff that people are looking for," Berkshire said.

With Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding only a week away, the shop has definitely seen a spike in visitors.

"To our amazement, we've had an outstanding amount of interest, more so here than we had anticipated," Berkshire said. "In the UK . . . it's just another royal event coming up. But here, people have for weeks now been interested in it and planning parties, and we've had to go to UK specially and get stuff air-freighted in to get here in time."

Taste of Britain currently has an entire display of Royal Wedding paraphernalia, including china, T-shirts and aprons bearing the couple's names and wedding date.

Despite all the success the shop has seen in the past two decades, Berkshire has no plans to expand beyond the current building.

"Norcross has been so good to us and so supportive of us," she said. "We couldn't wish for a better location."
