Gwinnett County Police Department to hold job fair

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- The Gwinnett County Police Department will hire new officers during a job fair this weekend.

The department said it is looking for professional candidates who are interested in improving the quality of life in Gwinnett, and serving and protecting the county's 800,000 residents.

Gwinnett officers earn competitive salaries, tuition reimbursements, health and 401(k) benefits, and access to take-home cars.

The job fair will be Saturday, Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county's Police Training Center, which is located at 854 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.

Those who are interested in becoming police officers can pre-apply at gwinnettpolicejobs.com.

Gwinnett County Public Library is proud to announce New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván, a 17-year veteran and former U.S. Army captain, as the featured author for the 2014 One Book, One Community countywide reading program.
Montalván will be joined by his beloved service dog, Tuesday, for events on September 20 and 21.
Montalván and Tuesday will kick off the 2014 Suwanee Fest on Saturday, September 20 at 9 am as grand marshals for the Suwanee Fest Parade.
At 11:30 am on the Town Center Stage, Montalván will read from his children’s book, “Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog,” which details a day in the life of this service dog extraordinaire as narrated by Tuesday.

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The first day of school is only a few weeks away, and young people in Gwinnett County are invited to celebrate the end of summer at an overnight party.

The Back to School Bash Lock-in will begin Friday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. and will end Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7 a.m. It will be held at Lucky Shoals Park Community Recreation Center.

Attendees must be between 8 and 13 years old, and are asked to bring sleeping bags and pajamas. They will enjoy pizza, games and a movie at night, and waffles in the morning.

Mobile Mammography Center coming to metro Atlanta

(WXIA) -- The BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center will make several stops in the Atlanta area this week.

The state-of-the-art screening center will stop by Belk stores to give free mammograms to customers.

Women who are at least 40 years old, have primary care doctors, have no history of breast concerns and have not had mammograms in the last 12 months are encouraged to schedule appointments with the Mobile Mammography Center by calling 855-655-BMMC.

The mammograms are performed by licensed technologists from Charlotte Radiology. After their procedures, participants will be treated to free bra fittings at Belk.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. -- Local bestselling author Karin Slaughter will hold a book discussion and signing in Gwinnett County next month.

Slaughter is on the road to promote her first stand-alone novel, Cop Town. She will appear at the Barnes & Noble at the Forum on Peachtree Parkway on Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m.

The event is part of the Gwinnett County Public Library's Meet the Author program. A portion of the day's sales at the Forum's Barnes & Noble will go to the Friends of Gwinnett County Public Library.

Slaughter is the author of 14 thrillers, including UndoneFracturedBeyond Reach and Faithless. She is also a passionate library advocate.

The Forum on Peachtree Parkway is located at 5155 Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners.

Author of 'guys' cookbook' to speak in Norcross

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The host of public television's "Primal Grill" will speak in Norcross this month.

Steven Raichlen is the author of several cookbooks, most recently Man Made Meals: The Essential Cookbook for Guys. He will talk and hold a book signing on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center.

Man Made Meals promises to deliver "the tools, techniques and tricks a man needs to feel confident and competent in the kitchen," according to Book Atlanta. Raichlen's man-friendly recipes have macho names like Blowtorch Oatmeal, Skillet Rib Steak, Mashed Potatoes Three Ways and Ice Cream Floats for Grown-Ups.

Raichlen's visit is sponsored by Eagle Eye Book Shop and the Gwinnett Public Library. The Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center is located at 10 College Street.

(WXIA) -- Few foods say "summer" like baby back ribs, and Shane's Rib Shack wants to celebrate the change in seasons with free summertime food.

On Saturday, May 17, participating Shane's Rib Shack locations will give away a free half-rack of baby back ribs and a 20-ounce drink to the first 100 customers. The lucky diners will also receive rib giveaway T-shirts.

"Our fifth annual rib giveaway provides us the opportunity to say thank you to all of our loyal customers and fans who have made Shane's Rib Shack what it is today," chain founder and president Shane Thompson said in a release.
