NORCROSS, Ga. -- Some state lawmakers are voicing support for a proposal to build a new gambling facility in Norcross.

Georgia developer Dan O'Leary wants to build a $1 billion complex in Norcross that would include 7,500 video lottery machines. He says the project would pump $350 million each year into the HOPE scholarship program.

Republican state Rep. Ron Stephens says dozens of lawmakers have supported his resolution urging the lottery board to approve video lottery terminals. He says it's a local control issue that should be decided by county commissioners and not a state organization.

O'Leary and his supporters say the project won't need legislative approval because it involves games already permitted under state law.

Lottery officials and Gov. Nathan Deal's office declined to comment on the proposal.
