Message from GDOT: Turn off your sprinklers!

ATLANTA -- It's going to be cold in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, with temperatures expected to hover around 27 in the mornings and climb no higher than 45 during the day.

FORECAST | Thanksgiving week temperatures

The Georgia Department of Transportation is asking homeowners to turn off sprinkler systems that are set to automatically run overnight.

"Every winter, we have icing issues due to automatically-timed sprinkler systems that are left on overnight in freezing temperatures," GDOT engineer Rachel Brown said in a statement. "They can create a very hazardous condition for motorists the next morning."

Those conditions include black ice, which can have devastating consequences. Monday morning, a Clayton County police officer was hurt when he hit a patch of black ice on his motorcycle.

Drivers are also cautioned to look out for black ice while driving overnight and early in the morning.
