NORCROSS: Fire ravages office building | News
NORCROSS, Ga. -- A two-alarm fire at 5555 Spalding Drive caused heavy damage and a partial collapse of the structure early Friday morning.
Gwinnett County Fire Department Captain Tommy Rutledge said the blaze was in the administrative offices of AkzoNobel, a global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals.
Company representatives at the scene said no one was in the two-story building, and no injuries have been reported.
Captain Rutledge said the building is located across the street from a Gwinnett fire station. When firefighters were initially dispatched to the alarm at 3:02 a.m., they could see the orange glow of the blaze as they exited the station. Firefighters knew they had a serious fire and immediately requested additional equipment and crews.
When crews arrived, heavy fire was showing from the front of the building and black smoke billowed through the roof. Captain Rutledge said firefighters attempted to enter the building initially, but were forced to back out because of intense fire conditions and a partial collapse of the building.
Spalding Drive between Peachtree Parkway and Triangle Parkway was closed during the morning commute.
Cause of the fire is under investigation.
