Driver killed after van crashes into bridge

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Police say one person was killed after driving a van into the side of a bridge in Gwinnett County Monday.

According to Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department, a work van was heading south on Interstate 85 when it left the road and struck the side of Center Way bridge.

The van's driver was killed. There were no passengers in the van and no other vehicles were involved, Smith said.

Four lanes of I-85 were closed Monday afternoon as crews worked to clear the scene.

(WXIA) -- Interstate 20 will bear the brunt of this weekend's roadwork, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Drivers are asked to avoid nonessential travel on I-20, as road projects will require lane closures that will likely result in delays.

A number of surface streets will also be impacted by construction crews.

Cobb/Fulton counties: I-285
2 northbound lanes will be closed between Bolton and South Atlanta roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete rehabilitation.

Coweta County: I-85
1 southbound lane will be closed at Sharpsburg-McCullum Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Monday for barrier wall installation.

(WXIA) -- Once again, drivers in the Atlanta area are asked to avoid non-essential travel on Interstate 285 this weekend.

Georgia Department of Transportation road crews will work on several stretches of roads and highways throughout the area Friday night through Monday morning. Many of the projects will require lane closures, which could result in delays.

As always, all work is weather permitting. See this weekend's forecast.

Scheduled projects include:

Coweta County
1 southbound lane of I-85 will be closed at Sharpsburg-McCullum Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Monday for barrier wall installation.

DeKalb County
2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Covington Highway and I-20 from 7:30 p.m. Saturday to 7:30 a.m. Sunday for sign structure work.

Car hits pedestrian outside Gwinnett QuikTrip


GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Police are looking for the car that hit a pedestrian outside a gas station last weekend.

The victim was struck at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in front of the QuikTrip in the 3200 block of Peachtree Corners Circle. Police said the victim was seriously injured in the accident.

The car drove away immediately after hitting the victim. Surveillance cameras at QuikTrip captured images of it -- a white or champagne colored four-door passenger car with dark-tinted windows. The accident likely caused damage to its front bumper, hood and windshield.

Police are also looking for a possible witness, who was driving a newer model Honda Civic acting as a taxicab. The Civic had an oval decal with red or orange writing on its passenger side door.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Gwinnett County's Accident Investigation Unit at 678-442-5653.

Ga. First Lady hosts circus-themed pep rally


NORCROSS, Ga. -- Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal teamed up with Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey to hold a circus-themed pep rally for a group of third graders on Monday.

Mrs. Deal read Dr. Seuss' If I Ran the Circus to the Rockbridge Elementary students while the famous Ringling Clowns put on a show.

The students were rewarded with the fun pep rally for reading nearly 3,400 books over the past two weeks.

The top three third grade classes will attend the circus at the Gwinnett Center on Friday.

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation will continue to perform sign structure work on Interstate 285 this weekend.

Most of the projects will require lane closures, which could result in lengthy delays. Drivers are asked to avoid the Perimeter in impacted areas if possible.

All work is weather permitting.

Scheduled projects include:

Cobb County
1 lane of I-75 in each direction will be closed between Delk Road and South Marietta Parkway from 7:30 a.m. Saturday to 5:30 p.m. Sunday for sign structure work.

Coweta County
1 northbound lane of I-85 will be closed from 2 miles north of Bullsboro Drive from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly for striping.

DeKalb County
2 westbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Northlake Parkway and Chamblee Tucker Road from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Bolton Road and South Cobb Drive from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete rehabilitation.
