GWINNETT: Court to consider speedy trial claim

GWINNETT: Court to consider speedy trial claim

ATLANTA -- A death penalty defendant who has been awaiting trial for a Gwinnett County killing since March 2005 is asking Georgia's top court to dismiss all charges for violations of his right to a speedy trial for the second time in less than two years.

Khahn Dinh Phan is asking the Georgia Supreme Court to dismiss his charges because he said the state has "chronically underfunded" the death penalty defense system.

Phan was accused of the December 2004 shootings of a Vietnamese couple and their two-year-old son over a gambling debt. The father and son died, while the wife suffered severe injuries.

Phan was appointed two public defenders, but the case lagged amid a funding delay. Prosecutors say Phan brought the delays upon himself.

DULUTH: Gingrich to address Ga. GOP forum

DULUTH, Ga. -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is set to speak at a Republican presidential forum in Gwinnett County.

The former House Speaker will address the 7th congressional district GOP in Duluth Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Seventh District GOP Chairman Jason Thompson said the open, town hall-style format will provide Georgians "an up-close and personal opportunity to meet and hear candidates in person, instead of just on television."

Thompson said the group has invited all Republican primary presidential candidates to come for individual sessions before the group and is hopeful more will choose to attend.

Gingrich, a former congressman from Georgia, is trailing frontrunners Mitt Romney, Herman Cain and Rick Perry in public opinion polls.

The White House Visits Powertalk

It was an exciting day on Powertalk w/ Lorraine Jacques White today, as Valerie B. Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, stopped by to chat about the American Jobs Act and how it will impact and benefit African Americans.

As you know, the African American community is the one group that has been hardest hit by the economic crisis, and despite the fact that private sector jobs have been added over the past 19 months, still, too many Americans are without work. Valerie Jarrett had a few words to say that helped to clear up the issue and let the Powertalk audience know where we’ll go from here.

What are your thoughts on the state of the economy? Will President Obama be able to pull out a save for African Americans and the nation as a whole? #SoundOff

The GPCA Challenges Other Associations to Join the Fight to Cure Blood Cancer

Valera Jessee, Executive Director of the Georgia Pest Control Association (GPCA) challenges other non-profit associations to come together in support of the Light The Night Walk. "The Light The Night Walk brings together members in a friendly competition and supports the communities from which we draw our livelihood", said Jessee.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) relies heavily on funds raised through the GPCA. Since 2004, member companies of the GPCA have raised over $708,000. The goal this year is to raise another $100,000. What is unique about this partnership is that companies competing to eliminate your pest problem are joining forces for the common good.
