"Ghost Out" at Norcross High School shows devastating consequences of drinking and driving

Norcross, Ga -  At this time of the year, students are excited about the prom, graduation parties and often don't realize the consequences of being reckless and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.   On May 18th, 2011, Norcross High School presented "Ghost Out" to the entire student body.   Around 3000 students crowded into the stadium to see first-hand, a simulation of a serious accident involving two cars racing and heading to a graduation party.    Following the collision,  sirens from the police cars and firetrucks filled the area around the school as the police and firefighters rushed onto the field.  The  victims were extracted from the vehicle using the "Jaws of Life" provided by the Gwinnett Firefighters and one student was pronounced dead and one critically injured.   A Georgia Lifeflight helicopter landed on the field and removed the critically injured teen.    The driver that was impaired was given a field sobriety test, handcuffed and arrested for DUI.    Following this, a funeral service was held with a hearse and casket provided by Crowell Brother's funeral home.   Pallbearers were provided and the sister of the dead victim spoke his eulogy.     The entire student body watched in silence as the reinactment progressed.   Tears were seen on many faces, both students, parent volunteers and teachers.

The performance was done by the Norcross High Drama Department and drama students and was funded by the Norcross PTSA.   Many parent volunteers who viewed the reinactment felt that it was important so that the kids see what could happen to them if they make bad decisions.  It was felt that if this program can save one life, it will have been worth the effort.  Hopefully, this presentation will be remembered for many years by the students.

Many thanks to the Norcross PTSA, Gina Parrish, Norcross Drama Dept, Norcross Police Department, Gwinnett Fire Department, Crowell Brothers Funeral Home, Jirah Supplies, Georgia Lifeflight Helicopters  and CC Waters Wrecker Service.    This presentation is done every 5 years at Norcross High School.
